Smoking cigarettes + aquarium = ?

I do a lot of smoking in my bedroom, where I keep my 55 gallon tank that houses 8 goldfish. I know that there are a lot of water soluable chemicals in cigarettes, but what are the chances that they will actually permeate the water? I keep my aquarium aerated by having the filter output about 4 inches above the water, creating a lot of surface agitation. So there's no air pump to draw the smoke into the tank. Is this still harmful to my fish? Please no ignorant remarks. Thank you.

As being a smoker myself, I have wondered the same thing.

Considering long after the smoke has looked like it has dissipated, it's still in the air in a low ventilated area. If you have breeze blowing or a fan blowing with windows open all the time, this can reduce the amount of smoke sitting in the air which I would guess it will also reduce what is going into your tank. I'm sure there is going to be traces of nicotine and other harmful chemicals from the smoke in your tank water, but as for how much is questionable.

As suggested, putting your ciggie hand in the tank isn't a good idea unless you absolutely have to. Before I put my hands in the tank I always scrub under my fingernails and fingers with a nail brush. Even then, a lot of the nicotine is still inside of your skin so possibly a aquarium glove would be best. I personally have had no ill effects, or no known ill effects from my smoking towards my aquariums, but breeze is always blowing through my house.

I'm not going to preach to you about not smoking because that would make me a hypocrite, but we probably both know that we should stop anyway..No one truly understands what an addiction is unless they get addicted themselves and we all know no one would want to right? So let others give you the smart alec remarks about quitting, it's their right and their only looking out for us and others around us, but they will never truly understand unless they are or were once addicted..

And if you really think about it, most people who come on this site have way worse problems with their knowledge about fish and how to care for them. If you have tank with healthy fish and/or plants and there are no ill effects your doing great.
