Is food coloring safe for parrots or not? (Not for coloring food, but toys)?

I started making a foraging toy for our Cockatoo.... I sprinkled red food coloring on it and my husband was like
"NO!!! THAT'S BAD! IT WILL KILL HIM!!!!"
So, I threw out the paper I had dyed. I'm not understanding what I can or can't use because I am getting contradictory information.

Does anyone know what is and isn't safe for dyes?

Having a colorful environment and toys is important for birds. Use vegetable dye, you can make your own at home and its 100% bird safe. there's all sorts of recipes and instructions online for how to do this, so just google it and you'll be on your way.
