What breed of dog should I get?

We're thinking about getting a dog some time that is a small-medium breed. It can be from chihuahua to beagle sized. I live with my mom in a small house (2 bed, 2 bath, small yard) in a small neighborhood in a medium-sized population town. In the mornings I go to my grandmother's house (which has 4 chihuahuas, a pond, large yard area, and a small pasture near by) and go to school for the day and come back to wait for my mom to pick me up. On the weekends I go to my dads (1 bed 1 bath, small yard). What breed/s of dog/s can handle a fair amount of moving around, other dogs, and people? It can't be too energetic, just a fair amount of energy. What dog/s fit this description the most?
I would like a dog that has low grooming maintenance. something like a monthly bath

I recommend visiting http://www.petfinder.com and have a look around at what's available at your area. Look for a dog that's older then 1 year old and fits your needs. Talk with the rescue people about yout plans and ask if they think this dog will work for that.

A lot of what you are talking about depends on the particular dog. For example, my dog adapts to anything. We can travel with her for 3 weeks, stay at 10 different hotels, and she's fine. But, the foster dog I have right now can't handle any kind of change - same breed.
