can you turn it off ?

Im getting a snake and my friend who's dad breeds snakes suggested that i use a heat mat instead of lamps and she also said to turn it off at night to imitate night to the snake and turn it back on in the morning and in case i forget to get a timer so it automatically does it but can you turn it off or would they get too cold and if you could turn it off what time in the morning and night would i turn it on and off ?? and also its going to be a hatchling and i researched and found that it will get stressed really easy in a big tank and could die and needs to be a small container or tank till it gets bigger but would you need a heating pad with the small tank, cause me and my mum were at a pet store for my dog and we looked at the snakes and the snakes didn't have anything to keep them warm and that so do hatchlings need a heat mat?????

Hi, yes your friend is spot on, you must turn the heating off at night, at this time of year allow 12 hours on and 12 hours off, then increase the heating by an hour per month until mid summer and then reduce by an hour per month until you are back at 12 hours, I breed pythons and have for many years,as well as keeping corn snakes and bearded dragons. I would advise you use a heat lamp once your snake is kept in a full size tank, but a heat mat will be fine while he is young, just place the heat mat under his tank so as to cover half of the floor and this will allow him a cool area if he gets to hot, hope you enjoy your new pet, Stef.
