Dog nail trimming question: when you are about to cut the quick does the dog feel it?

I was trimming my chihuhua's nails. When I was pressing down to cut a nail, my dog gasped and started shaking and whimpering. I thought I hurt her. I let her down and immediately got her a treat.

She seemed very happy just to be on the ground- running around as if her nail didn't hurt. Later, I examined the nail and noticed the trimmers didn't even make a mark on the nail. Did my dog trick me?
I know how to grind nails. I own a dremel but its in storage.

Yes she did. Dogs are great actors & very manipulative in getting their way. It wouldn't hurt until the quick was actually cut & if the quick was really cut.
