How can I get my dog to eat?!?!?

My pom, who is 7 months old, has been fed by hand ever since he was 8 weeks old, when we got him. Now, he does not eat by himself. Sure, sometimes he'll eat a few pieces of his food by himself like off the floor or if we hold his bowl up to him, but he only eats when we're there with him. He does not eat by himself. I've tried before to get him to eat by himself. But nothing I do works. I pupt him in his room after taking him out to pee and poo in the morning. He was in there all morning, and did not eat. I put him in his crate with nothing but food, and he still won't eat. I don't know what to do!

Please help. How can I get my dog to eat by himself?

[Also, we feed him dry dog food, Canidae all stages of life. I think he might eat by himself if we got him wet dog food, but it's a bit more costly and more of a hassle than dry food, ya know. I don't know. What should i do?]

Put the food in the bowl.

Put the bowl on the floor.

Walk away.

Wait 15 or 20 minutes.

Take the food away.

Repeat at next scheduled feeding time.

Repeat at next scheduled feeding time.

Repeat at next scheduled feeding time.

Etc., etc., .......

He gets hungry enough, he'll eat.

ADDED: This is not a 'feeding problem' ... this is a dog who has been spoiled by handfeeding and now needs to learn the right way. And DON'T switch to a wet food, don't crack an egg over it, don't give your dog treats or scraps. And don't let the dog free-feed, either.

Tough it out. No healthy dog will starve itself if food is available.
